Bridges are usually placed in two visits. During the first visit, your dentist will re-contour the abutment teeth and take impressions (moulds) which will serve as a model from which the bridge will be made in the dental laboratory. A temporary bridge will be placed as an interim measure to protect your teeth.
During the second visit a permanent bridge will be checked, adjusted and cemented into place. It is possible to extract a tooth and replace it during the same visit with a temporary bridge, which is left for three to four months to allow healing of the extraction socket, before the completion of a permanent bridge.
Missing teeth can be caused by a variety of issues (dental caries, gum disease, accident, etc.) and can affect anyone at any age. It is important to consult with your dentist who understands the complexities of your mouth and they will be able to find the best solution for you to replace missing teeth, whether this is a bridge, a denture or an excellent long-term option – an implant.
